U.S. Black Beans and Ham on Rice Recipe: You know how else I can tell that the holidays are approaching? It’s when our family group chat becomes super busy, with my relatives back at home already planning what recipes they’ll be making for the Noche Buena (in the context of the Philippines, “Noche Buena” is the Christmas Eve celebration). Of course, the usual Filipino Noche Buena dishes will still be there –  such as the fruit salad, spaghetti, lechon, and lumpia. But every year, we all try to bring something new to the table, literally! The past years I’ve always brought desserts (one time I made this cute Graham Balls Snowman), so this year, I’m planning to bring a main dish – U.S. Black Beans Ham on Rice!

This recipe is relatively easy to make and the ingredients are accessible at the grocery store, so this would be a great recipe idea even for last minute Noche Buena preparations. Of course, it tastes incredible too! You may use smoked turkey breast as an alternative to pork, or use roasted tofu if you’re vegan.

Procedure

  1. Cook the rice as you normally would. If you’re using Japanese rice, make sure to soak it first in water for 20-30 minutes before cooking in the rice cooker. This will make the rice fluffier and softer.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a pan, then sauté the celery, white onion, and chili flakes, until they become translucent.
  3. Add the cubed ham, salted U.S. black beans, water, and bay leaves. Cook for 10 more minutes, or until the ham starts to caramelize. Note: Smoked turkey breast is a good alternative to ham. If you want a vegan option, roasted tofu works too!
  4. Add a pinch of salt to taste, then set aside.
  5. Put the cooked rice in a large bowl. Make some space in the center, and add the beans and ham as toppings. Serve warm.

I like using sweetened or glazed ham because it complements the saltiness of the beans. What you get is a savory dish that has a nice mix of sweet, salty, and spicy! I guess you can say that it’s healthy too because of the generous amounts of beans and celery. This is going to be a sure hit for the grownups and kids alike!
