This wasn’t even part of our itinerary, but it ended up being one of my absolute favorite food moments from our Bangkok trip. We were just walking around, casually exploring the city, when we came across this tiny shop called Gu Long Bao—and wow, it totally stole the show.

A Sidewalk Gem with Steaming Trays of Bao
Gu Long Bao is a small, unassuming spot, but it was hard to miss with the trays of bao they were preparing right on the sidewalk. You can tell this place is popular—there was a steady stream of people coming and going, grabbing their favorite buns to-go. The Gu Long Bao menu features a mix of sweet and savory options, like salted egg, BBQ char siu, taro, and black sesame. Everything looked so good, we had a hard time choosing!

We decided to try the black sesame bao, and it did not disappoint. It was soft, warm, and packed with filling—perfectly sweet without being too rich. Honestly, it was the kind of bun you’d want to eat slowly just to savor every bite. I can totally imagine having this as a midday treat or even a sweet ending to a meal.

One of the things I loved most about this experience was how local it felt. You’re literally eating on the sidewalk—no fancy tables, no air-conditioning, just you, your bao, and the city buzz around you. It felt raw and real, like we were part of Bangkok’s everyday rhythm. I live for these kinds of spontaneous food stops that turn out to be better than any planned resto reservation.

But the real highlight? Their pork siu mai with a tall glass of Thai iced tea. The siu mai was so flavorful and juicy—every bite was packed with meat and seasoning. Pairing it with that cold, sweet Thai tea was genius. It was such a simple combo, but so satisfying. Honestly, I would go back to Bangkok just to have that exact snack again. That’s how good it was.

Gu Long Bao Reviews: Believe the Hype
After that experience, I totally get why Gu Long Bao reviews are glowing. It may not look like much from the outside, but this place is a gem. It’s one of those food spots you just stumble upon and end up talking about for weeks. Definitely adding it to my mental list of must-revisits.

So yeah, sometimes the best meals are the ones you didn’t plan. Gu Long Bao wasn’t on the itinerary, but it ended up becoming the most delicious detour of our trip.
